Akatsuki will become the new bijuu?
I've gotten to thinking: according to Gaara, Shukaku was originally a monk of the Sand Village who somehow became a demon before being sealed up in a jar of tea. Now, it's entirely possible that this is just a myth circulated in the Sand Village, or that Kishimoto put this detail in the manga before he fully worked out the bijuu storyline; but, if it is still canon, it's gotten me thinking that Akatsuki might be becoming the new bijuu.
If what Gaara said about Shukaku's origins is true, than it's possible that several, if not all of the bijuu were originally human beings who transformed into monsters. And, if any people in Naruto have the potential to become demons (not counting jinchurrikis, of course) than it's Akatsuki. I mean, we know of a total of eleven Akatsuki members (past and present). Of those, there are three about which we know almost nothing (the Akatsuki Leader, Blue Hair, and Tobi). Of the Akatsuki we've seen more of, almost all of them have, in some way, gone beyond humanity in a way. Itachi is the most normal of them, with only a highly advanced bloodline trait, but the others appear to, either naturally or via body modification, have a number of inhuman traits. Deidara has mouths in the palms of his hands; Sasori transferred his heart into a living puppet; Hidan's body is seemingly unkillable; Kisame looks like a human shark hybrid; Zetsu's got that Venus Flytrap thing plus different colors for each half of his body; Kakuza's turned his whole body into a collection of hearts tied together by weird wires/veins; and Orochimaru (in addition to his naturally snake-like eyes) switches bodies, routinely alters his appearance, and has used forbidden jutsu to let any part of his body stretch indefinitely.
What I'm getting at is what if something like this is where bijuu come from; ninjas, in pursuit of greater power, alter their physiologies until they cease to be human beings and become giant monsters. This is really just an idle theory, but I think it would be neat if, many years ago, an earlier incarnation of Akatsuki or a similar organization was doing much of what Akatsuki is now, and, in pursuit of power, its nine members became the nine bijuu.
Admittedly, the AL's plan for world domination doesn't really include anything about becoming demons, but it could be a little twist down the road that's a little less predictable than Akatsuki simply making themselves jinchurriki.

Sometimes simplicity is for the best. There are alot of lose ends involving the konoha ninja and there relations and dreams that i would rather see solved then having the villians become even more ridicously strong and complex. Even with that said if the Al became one i dont see a problem with that as long as he is not to overly powerful.
would be fun if it did happen though.
You kind of misunderstood it. The Monk was a Jinchuuriki like Gaara was, not the actual Shukaku.
And Akatsuki in Chapter 329 gave their plan. They arn't going to become new Jinchuuriki's themselves, they are going to unleash the Bijuu and somehow going to control them in the process.
But somehow, I still got a sneeking suspicion the AL is using the other Akatsuki as pawns to gather to Bijuu to unleash a greater evil. Which I think is unleashing the Demon of Hell itself, which needs all the Bijuu (or at least 8 of them) to revive.
hmmm....hard to rule the world when there is nothing left to rule......

Huh, the way I heard it was that Shukaku was supposed to be quot;the living incarnationquot; of that monk. Course, I don't really picture Gaara as the kind of guy who meticulously studies history books.
Here, best you read these instead of me explaining.
