Tokyo - A massive earthquake struck near the Russian-ruled Kuril islands in the northern Pacific Ocean on Wednesday, triggering a tsunami warning for Japan's coast, the meteorological agency said.

The earthquake registered 8.1 on the Richter scale at 20:15 (11:15 GMT) on the Pacific coast, the Japan meteorological agency said in a statement.

It said waves of up to two metres were on course to hit Japan's northern coast and the Kuril islands as early as 21:10 (12:10).

The agency urged residents to head to higher ground, a warning passed on by local authorities.

The quake struck some 600km northeast of Japan's main northern island of Hokkaido on the Kuril island chain, too far away to be felt in Japan's major population centres.

Japan is home to 20% of the world's major earthquakes, frequently jolting its cities.

Likely nothing will happen.  Tsunamis of appreciable size happen under special circumstances, not just from powerful earthquakes.

If this capsizes the superfreighters carrying the Wiis and PS3s, I'll be pissed.

Yeah, when i was in japan, there was this teensie earthquake.....ahhhhh it was so cute! but 8.1 is like.....a real fuck off earthquake.

I hope it doesn't kill all the sexy Japanese women.

I've surfed 4 metre heaving pits. lol. But I've also seen pro's go...ohh...5 times over head just down the road from my house.
